Joseph Addison had experienced his fair share of tragedy. Most notably, the British politician Addison managed to narrowly survive an awful shipwreck. It was this tragic accident, and his harrowing tale of survival, that would go on to inspire the uplifting hymn, “When All Thy Mercies, O My God”.
