Born into the home of a German Reformed pastor on December 13, 1851, Edwin Othello Excell worked as a plasterer and bricklayer. But he was also a singing instructor who loved song leading. E.O. Excell contributed to about ninety secular and sacred songbooks and is estimated to have written, composed, or arranged more than two thousand of the songs he published.
